The 11th edition of the Global Youth Leadership Programme (GYLP) kicked off on December 26, 2023, at the Swami Dayananda Centre for Learning, nestled within the serene SDV campus at Manjakkudi. This special Programme, designed for high school and college students from the USA, offers a unique opportunity to engage with rural India during their winter break, creating unforgettable memories and valuable experiences.
What is GYLP?
The Global Youth Leadership Programme is more than just an educational exchange—it’s a journey of transformation. Each year, GYLP participants immerse themselves in the heart of village life, becoming active contributors in rural schools, engaging with children, and sharing their knowledge and culture. The Programme emphasizes reciprocal learning, where both participants and rural students gain from each other’s experiences and insights.
Bridging Cultures Through Education
One of the main highlights of the Programme is how participants become mentors to local students. They teach spoken and written English, simplify hands-on science concepts, and share the beauty of Indian classical music and dance. In turn, they also introduce rural students to the history, culture, and sports of the USA. This cultural exchange fosters deep bonds and helps bridge the gap between urban and rural communities.
The learning goes both ways. For many of the participants, it’s a chance to see a different side of India, far removed from the fast-paced life of cities. It’s a unique experience to witness the simplicity, warmth, and resilience of village life, all while contributing to something meaningful.
Building Global Citizens and Leaders
The GYLP isn’t just about teaching; it’s about shaping tomorrow’s leaders. Each participant takes on a role of responsibility, learning how to communicate across cultures and inspire young minds. The Programme helps them develop leadership skills while promoting the spirit of volunteerism. By stepping out of their comfort zones, participants grow both personally and professionally.
To recognize their hard work and dedication, the Swami Dayananda Education Trust (SDET) awards each participant with a certificate acknowledging 100 hours of voluntary service. This not only serves as a token of appreciation but also highlights their commitment to making a difference.
A Journey That Transforms
The GYLP is more than just a Programme—it’s a life-changing journey for everyone involved. As this year’s participants embark on their adventure in rural India, they’re not just teaching—they’re learning, growing, and becoming part of a larger movement towards global understanding and service.
With every iteration of the GYLP, young leaders from the USA leave Manjakkudi with hearts full of gratitude and minds enriched by their experiences, knowing they’ve made a positive difference while learning invaluable lessons about life, leadership, and community.
As the 11th GYLP unfolds, it stands as a testament to the power of education, empathy, and cultural exchange in shaping the leaders of tomorrow.
